Water Sports Experience
Enjoy a paddle around the beautiful Talkin Tarn with your household or small group. Where better to be distanced from other people?! Your dedicated instructor will show you everything you need to know and help you develop your technique as you explore the lake during your 90 minute private session.
Whether you choose Stand Up Paddle Boarding or a Kayaking experience, you will have a brilliant time trying something new and exciting. You will learn new skills and your instructor will introduce various games and challenges as you journey around the venue.
Use of all equipment, coaching and changing facilities following the activity are all included in the price. Simply follow the instructions below to book onto a session, then come along ready for your SUP or Kayak taster session with a towel, change of clothes and shoes that can get wet. We do not provide wetsuits and recommend warm, comfortable clothing.
Your instructor will be with you throughout your session to offer guidance and safety support. They will keep a good distance at all times unless needed in the unlikely event of an emergency situation. To minimise the need for instructor intervention, the minimum age for SUP activity sessions is 12 years. Under 18s should be accompanied on the water by an adult. The minimum age for kayak sessions is 10 years, however we do have 2 tandem kayaks so an adult can accompany younger children.
This is a private session for your group, based on up to 6 people taking part in your chosen activity.
The changing rooms/toilets will be available for you to use, following your activity, but please arrive "ready to go".
We recommend comfortable clothing to suit the conditions, such as sports wear and training shoes. Wetsuits can become quite uncomfortable and whilst you may fall in, the aim is to stay on your board/boat. Please remember spare clothes, a towel and shoes that can get wet - and spare shoes! It is also a good idea to wear a lightweight, wind/waterproof layer.
Talkin Tarn provides the ideal venue to try paddle boarding and kayaking, with easy access to the water, warm showers and changing rooms. The venue is also easily reached from Carlisle, Hexham or Newcastle.
We will provide buoyancy aids, which must be worn, suitable for all sizes up to 110kg/130cm chest. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that will get wet. Remember a change of clothes and a hat/sun cream.

When people think of coming to the northern end of Cumbria or Carlisle itself, it's natural for first thoughts to be of outdoor activities in the Lake District National Park. All the renowned activity centres are there and many local readers of this page will remember how you used to love playing outdoor games at Cumbria's once famous residential centres like Hawse End, Denton House and Fellside. All bar one, are now gone.
You may be less familiar with northern Cumbria's secret gem, Talkin Tarn. It's an idyllic setting for outdoor pursuits and water games for kids and adults alike. And when your water sports session is over, there are lots of other opportunities.
There are quiet tracks and bridleways for mountain biking, or you can explore nearby Gelt Woods. Just beyond Talkin Village you can stroll to the top of Talkin Fell. There you can soak in the views of the Lake District Hills, the Debatable Lands and on a clear day, even the Cheviot Hills shimmering in the distance.
