When the team at Recycling Lives approached us for a bespoke team-building event, we knew this would be a memorable day. The charity, based in Preston, wanted to create a space where employees from their head office could bond with volunteers and colleagues from various regions. On the day of the event, 48 participants arrived, buzzing with excitement and curiosity about the day ahead. Rather than sticking rigidly to the pre-planned schedule, we made the decision to run a **whole-group Treasure Chest Challenge** in the morning, which turned out to be a huge hit. This challenge brought out the best in everyone as they worked together to solve puzzles, unlock clues, and ultimately claim the coveted treasure chest prizes (in this case, chocolate! Teams had to communicate effectively, pool their diverse skills, and work under pressure—all essential elements for a successful day of team building.
Within 15 minutes of beginning the challenge, one delegate commented how this event was "so much better than last year's away day". (somewhere else :))
A hearty buffet lunch provided a welcome break and an opportunity for everyone to share stories from the morning's activities. Over lunch, we confirmed with the group organisers exactly how the afternoon would pan out and how many of their team would get out onto the water.
In the afternoon, the group that had originally been apprehensive about getting on the water found their groove with an archery session. While the rest of their colleagues enjoyed the raft-building experience, this subgroup thrived on the archery range, embracing the opportunity to test their precision and focus in a more grounded environment.
Meanwhile, the raft-building group had an absolute blast. Participants learned how to construct a sturdy raft using ropes, barrels, and wooden poles. The challenge wasn't just about the physical task of assembling a raft—it was also about fostering communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. Some of the highlights included watching the groups race their handmade rafts across the water, with cheers, splashes, and laughter filling the air.
