Our walk from New Mills Trout Farm, Brampton to Talkin Tarn Country Park

New Mills Trout Farm, just outside Brampton, Cumbria, is a great place to stay. If you are looking for glamping in Cumbria, somewhere to stay near to Hadrian's Wall, or just a break from the city then take a look at what's on offer here. Whilst New Mills is just a short drive from us at Talkin Adventures, we took a lovely country walk between the two places. If you are staying in one of the WigWam Holidays Glamping Cabins here, then we suggest you do the same.

It was a bit of a rainy day when we took our walk, as you will see in the pics. There are a couple of options of route, depending on your group and time. Our preference would be to walk to the town and then along a really nice footpath to Brampton Station and then on to Talkin Tarn. There is a quicker route but it takes you along a busier, fast road. Both routes are accessible for those in reasonable health and not particularly strenuous, although there is a stepped bridge over the railway at Brampton Station.

Route One
Approx. 1hr 15mins, 3 miles
Generally good paths with a couple of muddy sections and one quiet country lane after the initial road section from New Mills to Brampton.
Route Two
Approx. 45 mins, 2.5 miles
Along roads and tracks, more direct but probably suited to adults/teens due to the section of fast road (A689).

Route One

From New Mills Trout Farm, turn right onto the A6071 towards the town of Brampton. Walk along the road and soon a footpath becomes available to use. As you reach Brampton, take the first road to the left, then left again up Station Road, passing the garage.

After around 150m up Station Road, you will come to another garage on the right. The footpath immediately before the garage will take you under the A69 and all the way to Brampton Station.

This is a lovely little route if you are staying in Brampton.

From Brampton Station you are just under a mile from Talkin Tarn. Go over the railway bridge and out of the station. Turn right and walk along the road. It's pretty quiet but watch out for cars. We found some juicy raspberries along the way.

The track to Talkin Tarn is on the left, around 500m along the road. It isn't very well signed but look out for a big metal gate and rough farm track.

As you near Talkin Tarn, the track goes to the left, but keep to the path along the right as this will bring you straight to the gate for the Country Park.

We hope you enjoy your walk. When planning your trip to Cumbria, be sure to check our website for opening and activity session availability. Some sessions are available to book online and we love to arrange group events.

If you fancy a more direct route to us from New Mills Trout Farm and WigWam Holidays then see route 2 below.

Route Two

Turn right from New Mills onto the A6071, then cross the road and turn left towards Cumcatch Farm (opposite Four Gables Self Catering Accommodation). Remember to leave the gate as you find it. The lane will take you under the A69, and past the farm. When you arrive at the main road (A689), turn left and after approximately 400-500m turn right towards Brampton Station, then pick up the route from above.
